Dr. Sally A. Mays, PhD

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Maryland and authorized to provide teletherapy in Maryland and 26 other states (PsyPact)

Hello and welcome! I provide therapy and testing for teenagers and adults. I mainly treat problems through cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which means my clients and I work together to define what needs to change both inside and outside and to develop new ways of thinking and acting. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling stuck, unsure, exhausted, maybe even “crazy.” My goal is to instill a sense of confidence in yourself and your choices. You should fairly quickly feel like I understand your problem and am giving you some concrete ideas to work on. I’m active, down-to-earth, and genuinely enjoy talking to my clients.

Specialized Training

  • CBT for anxiety, depression, and insomnia
  • Mindfulness and relaxation
  • Motivational interviewing for behavior and habit change
  • Structural family therapy

Training and Background

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Journalism from Washington and Lee University and a Master’s degree and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. After a brief and unglamorous job in academic publishing, I worked as a research assistant at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. I conducted, presented and published research on the role of parents and peers on substance abuse and emotional well-being in adolescents. I worked for several years providing therapy to college students at college counseling centers and have taught classes in Developmental Psychology, Learning and Cognition, and Psychological Assessment to undergraduate and graduate students. Since 2014 I have worked full-time as a therapist in group and private practice.
